Buddhist Meditation
with Marianne Brady

Mondays | Drop-in Class | 6.30pm

This will be an opportunity to learn meditation practices that develop mindfulness, awareness, emotional positivity and a deep, nourishing relaxation. Although these are ancient techniques taken from the Buddhist tradition, they are as relevant and effective today as they were two and a half thousand years ago.

Each week you will be guided through a meditation that you can then practice at home.

What happens?

These will include:

bullet

Mindfulness meditation - for awareness, clarity and centeredness

bullet

Mettabhavana - for the development of positive emotion

bullet

Bodyscan meditation - for relaxation and grounding

bullet

Mantra chanting - for energy and integration

These meditations can be used simply to bring some more calm, well-being and perspective to a busy, stressful life, or to develop a greater sense of meaning and spiritual depth for those searching for something beyond their day-to-day lives.

What you will get out of it

‘Coming Home’

Sometimes our inner experience can be pushed aside by the stresses, demands and simply the unrelenting stimulation of our outer lives. This can lead to tension, negativity and a sense of life becoming shallow and unsatisfying.

Meditating with a guide and within a group setting is the most effective way of learning techniques that can give us back to ourselves. Meditation is quality time for you; it is an opportunity to really come home to ourselves and restore the balance between our outer life and inner experience.

Stepping Out

Paradoxically, when we start to address the needs of our inner life then our outer life starts to change too. Life can become more lucid; we have more energy to engage creatively with challenges, and more emotional positivity with which to relate to the people in our lives.

Support

The structure and guidance provided in a class can give us the support we need to start to meditate, or refresh an existing meditation practice. But more than that, actually meditating with others can create a tangible atmosphere that helps us to go deeper.

Going-solo

Coming to the occasional meditation class will be nourishing and beneficial in itself. But with the regular support of a class it is possible, if you wish, to develop your own meditation practice. It is with regular practice with others as well as at home alone, that meditation can take off and we can really start to see positive changes in our life.

"I stumbled upon meditation twenty seven years ago. I simply wanted some more confidence and inner peace in my life. It certainly gave me that, but it also opened up a whole new vista - an exploration that was to become the focus of the rest of my life.

I became involved with Buddhism - living in Buddhist communities, working in Buddhist businesses, studying, meditating and attending retreats. In 1990 I was ordained into the Western Buddhist Order and became a full-time meditation and dharma teacher at the London Buddhist Centre for 13 years.

I now live with my husband, teach meditation around London and also work in the London Buddhist Arts Centre.

I still feel that the gift of meditation is unfolding into my life. It is a constant source of nourishment and exploration - of myself and of life's meaning. It is also a gift in itself to be able to pass on these tools for change to others.

Since becoming a member of the Western Buddhist Order in 1990 I have taught in the UK, Berlin, Ireland, Nepal. In spiritual centers, educational centres and corporate settings.

In the last 3 years I have been extending my training in meditation to include a more health-based orientation with meditation for pain management and presently I am exploring the use of meditation in the treatment of depression with the Breathing Space project at the London Buddhist Centre.

I also have also always been fascinated by the use of voice in personal development both as a singer and using chanting and voice as a meditation. I have run a number of chanting courses and retreats.

I have also appeared on TV (Footsteps Echo Channel 4) and Radio (The Love Principle Radio 2, Who is the Buddha Radio 2, Chanting Tiratnavandana Sunshine Radio)."
