Wake up Little Suzy

When I was
born, way back in 1962 in Bombay (now Mumbai) India, I apparently spent the most
of infant days sleeping. My father decided to call me Suzy after the song by the
Everley Brothers, Wake up Little Suzy.
Little Suzy did
wake up, but not really until I was about 38 years old, when I received a
Spiritual Wake up call!
I moved to
London when I was 12 years old to live with my aunt and her family because I had
no one left in India to take care of me. As a child I experienced great losses
and had to leave all my painful past behind and toughen up to a very new and
different world. Although my physical needs were now met in my new London home
(which was grossly missing prior to that as both my parents were alcoholics
before they tragically died), my emotional needs were far from met.
I grew up to be
a very good girl, pleasing my parents who adopted me and my new siblings in
every possible way I knew how. I was ‘nice’ to everyone and not surprisingly
some people took advantage of this. I went into nursing to heal others (and of
course myself), got married at the age of 23 and had two very beautiful
children. I was looking for love and approval but actually never truly found it;
the unconditional love a child experiences from her parents was never really
found.
I realise I
compromised myself in every way, losing my identity which was never really
encouraged to develop. I loved singing, acting and dancing and soon gave them
all up to study hard and earn money to help support my family. I became a Health
Advisor and pursued a career in Stress Management, trying to find a better way
to live of life and enjoy it.
As a young
adult I felt unfulfilled, stressed and found little joy in life. Any attempt I
made at finding myself was soon squashed and I returned to a life of hard work
and never ending responsibilities – earning only enough cover the bills.
There was
however always hidden deep underneath a wild and ferocious fire. This finally
surfaced when I reached the age of 38. Luckily I saw how dangerous it could be
in its primal state and I found myself guided towards yoga and meditation. I
found here a way to balance the wild energies and channel them slowly towards
making some powerful changes in my life. I separated from my husband, started
teaching yoga and began my wakeful journey.
In the last
eight years I have learned more than I could ever have imagined. I have explored
the mind, the body and of course the spirit, from yoga philosophy to Quantum
Physics! I have been guided by some of the most inspirational spiritual teachers
and continue to learn how much more to me there is than I thought!
Meditation has
been a huge influence in my life and I teach and practice Tibetan Buddhist
Meditation. I am running Stress Management and Meditation courses at the college
to hopefully help others experience the benefits of Mental rest and relaxation.
I have learned
that I am a spiritual being having a human experience and that I have the
capacity to create anything I desire as long as I remember that I am connected
to a Higher Energy Source.
The regular
practice of meditation connects us with our Higher Source leaving us open to
infinite possibilities and clearing our minds of all the old childhood and other
patterns developed in the mind. Other neural pathways are opened and our outer
world also changes. We begin to start dreaming again and see our dreams as real
possibilities.
I believe that
this connection can be accessed through our feelings and above all through our
passions. As children we may lose this sense of infinite power, only to have the
opportunity to reclaim it in our adult life, and this is truly our journey.
Deepak Chopra says, it is like a game of hide and seek, ‘God hides Herself to
find Herself’.
We may even
remember what we were passionate about when we were younger and start to feel
more confident about living them out.
I took something called The Passion Test and discovered how quickly I was able
to identify what my top passions were in my life at the time. Having waited for
so long in my life to finally feel free to choose exactly what I desired, I was
like a child in chocolate shop, wanting it all, all at once. Attached to some of
my desires were also some hidden resistances, which were stopping me from
allowing them into my life. The Passion Test simply helped me to prioritise them
and focus on those which were most important to me at the time. This was
powerful in helping to manifest them more quickly and effectively. I take the
Passion Test every six months and feel a lot more control over my choices,
knowing that the chocolate shop is always there for me and I do not have to eat
it all at once!
I am running a
group session on The Passion Test in the summer and also welcome anyone who
wishes to take it as a private one to one session.
I am currently
on a Transpersonal Psychotherapy Diploma course and I feel like I am finally
coming home to myself, living my life as I choose it to be, ‘making each day
count’ as Jack said in the film Titanic.
I am thrilled
to be working here at the college, teaching, learning and sharing valuable
experiences with everyone as we come together to raise our spiritual awareness
and universal consciousness.
